Issue

Only the Governor & the Legislature Can Fix the Transit Budget Problem

Background

The past four years have seen several rounds of fare increases and/or service cuts. Transit riders are now paying much more for far worse service. As a result, ridership has been declining steadily since the year 2000.

Now the administration and Met Council propose to solve the current transit revenue shortfall with yet more fare increases and service cuts.

Public officials and the general public must hear how these cuts will impact you. They also need to hear how the past 4 years of cuts have hurt transit riders. Publicizing real stories from real people is one of the best ways for us to create public pressure to fix the problem.

While the Metropolitan Council is holding hearings on this issue to collect some stories - they do not have the power to fix the problem. Only the Governor & the Legislature can raise the funds to stop these transit cuts - so we must be sure they hear from the public too.

Transit funding has been cut 5 times in the last 4 years - so transit riders are already paying much more for much worse service.

Another round of service cuts and fare increases will not only be another major blow to tens of thousands of transit riders, but it will also harm the entire region's economy because transit is a key part of a balanced and effective transportation system.

Minnesota needs to change course by establishing a stable, increasing source of funding to keep pace with a vibrant and growing Twin Cities region - as the Metropolitan Council plans call for. We need an affordable and convenient transit system that works for all residents of the Twin Cities region.

The Legislature & the Governor need to be sure that any transportation bill passed this year accomplishes two things:

1. Stops these service cuts and fare increases by fully funding transit this year;

2. Funds the expanding transit system the Met Council calls for in their regional transportation plans.
