The Governor and Legislators Are Deciding on Transit Funding Now
The public understands that transportation choices are vital to our state’s quality of life and economic competitiveness. Two opportunities to fund a plan to expand our transit system are on the table at the legislature in the last days of this session.
As you know, Transit for Livable Communities has supported the Transportation Choices 2020 Initiative, a plan to use a regional half cent sales tax for transit and dedication of a portion of the motor vehicle sales tax (MVST) for transit. With the passage of both these measures, seven new rail and bus transitways will be built, bus service in the metro can be doubled, and all Minnesota counties can have transit service.
TLC continues to support passage of the constitutional amendment to dedicate the motor vehicle sales tax (MVST) to transportation, with at least 40% dedicated to transit. The MVST dedication is a critical first step, but only part of the solution. If this referendum passes, 40% of MVST will only fund about 1/3 of the planned transit expansion.
A plan to authorize counties in the metro area to raise a 1/2 cent transit sales tax is now also before the transportation conference commitee.
By authorizing counties to increase the regional sales tax to fund transit, funding for doubling the bus system and building a transitways system would be ensured. Additional funding for transit from a metro sales tax increase would also free up more of the MVST for Greater Minnesota transit.
Legislators and the Governor need to hear from you now as they make their final decisions in the last days of the legislative session.
