Action Alert: Take Action for Transit

Take Action for Transit

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Senate and House to Take Action on Transit This Week

Background

Too often, legislators say they don’t hear from community members when it comes to public transit needs. That’s where you can make a difference.

Your voices and energy can make or break this initiative. We need you to tell your legislators and Governor Pawlenty that you support comprehensive funding for a comprehensive transportation system.

**The Senate and the House will both hear Transportation Choices 2020 this week. (Click on "more" to find out when and where.)**

Our state deserves a healthy transportation system—and it deserves the comprehensive funding needed to make it happen. A transportation system is a region’s circulatory system—and transitways are the arteries. Whether it’s a commuter rail line, light rail, or the bus, each transit line creates a healthier transportation system, making it easier for all Minnesotans to reach their destinations.

Currently, our transit funding is haphazard. Rather than fully funding a healthy system, our legislature funds one transit line at a time. If even one of the planned transit lines isn’t funded, it can compromise the transportation health of the entire region.

We wouldn’t dream of funding education grade by grade. We shouldn’t fund transit corridor by corridor.

Support S.F. 1032 and H.F. 1112

Dear Governor,

Public transit makes our communities more vibrant and successful, connecting our region and shaping communities that we are proud to call home.

Unfortunately, what we want from a transportation system and what state policies deliver is increasingly disconnected. Minnesota shouldn’t have to wait a quarter century for the transportation results we need now.

We need you to be courageous and invest in a transportation future that includes public transit.

I urge you to support Transportation Choices 2020, Senate File 1032 and House File 1112.

Transportation Choices 2020 will implement the Metropolitan Council’s transit plan by 2020 rather than 2030 and provide funding for communities to improve bicycle and walking facilities. Expanded transit service in Greater Minnesota will be funded by nine percent of the Motor Vehicle Sales Tax revenues (Transportation Amendment).

The sales tax is broad-based, stable, and will allow Minnesota to leverage federal funding for our transitways by 2020.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
