Transit Funding Ignored - Again

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Special Session agenda will NOT include transportation funding

Background

The Governor has called the Legislature back for a one-day special session on September 11th to deal only with disaster relief including the flood damage in southeastern Minnesota, the effects of the lack of rainfall in other parts of the state and the fires in the Boundary Waters Wildnerness Area.

While the Governor had called for a special session to deal with transportation funding in the wake of the collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, the agenda for the session will not include a comprehensive transportation funding package that finally addresses our road and transit needs.

Transportation Funding Can't Wait

Dear Governor,

The sudden collapse of the I-35W bridge on August 1st served as a wake-up call to many Minnesotans, demonstrating how critical our transportation infrastructure is in our daily lives and how fragile some of the links in the system are.

While we don't yet know the exact cause of the collapse, we do know that the bridge was built with a design flaw that causes the entire bridge to fail if one critical member of the bridge fails. Other bridges in Minnesota were also built with the same fracture critical design. We also know that many of our bridges are structurally deficient and need to be repaired or replaced. It's time to step up and deal with these problems once and for all instead of waiting and reacting to disasters.

We have also seen, in the wake of several disasters, the critical role that transit service plays in evacuating people and providing mobility when important roads and bridges are washed away or are not available. The entire transportation system needs to be maintained and improved.

Last session a bare-bones "lights on" transportation funding bill was passed that doesn't even maintain current levels of funding for transportation. Just like the many projects that have been deferred, the funding for transportation keeps getting deferred to another day while the cost to deal with this problem grows.

It's time to invest in our transportation infrastructure! Please work with your fellow policymakers to finally pass a comprehensive transportation funding package that allows for significant progress on this issue on an ongoing basis.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
