Reject the $200 million subsidy for Mall of America

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Keeping the focus on transit options

Background

We need the kind of transportation development that adds to our region. Consider the following development that has occurred along existing transit routes:
Over 7,000 housing units have been built along Hiawatha light rail. The Midtown Greenway bike and pedestrian corridor is transforming that sector of south Minneapolis. Portland Oregons city-owned streetcar line, which cost $100 million, has stimulated in $2.4 billion in new development. In Denver, 11,000 housing units, 4,000 hotel rooms, 9 million sq. feet of retail, office space, and convention/sports facilities have been built or are under construction along that regions three existing light rail lines. Local funding for six additional corridors has been secured.

Don't subsidize parking

Dear Representative,

The Mall of America is asking for a $200 million subsidy for a parking lot that furthers our dependence on cars -- at a time when we need to move away from costly oil consumption and congestion. Please remember that our future lies with development and focus on transit and the jobs and development that new transit lines will bring to our region.
