It's do or die time - Legislators Need to Hear from You!

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Decisions are being made regarding bus funding NOW.

Background

It's down to crunch time and the legislature and Governor are meeting right now to decide the transportation budget. Right now, transit budgets are slated to be cut significantly. A conference committee is meeting to work out the final bill. These folks and the Governor need to hear from transit advocates. Tell them how important bus service is to you. If they don't hear from advocates, higher fares and less service will be coming your way soon!

Protect Bus Systems in Minnesota!

Dear Governor Pawlenty,

Thousands of people like me take the bus every day in order to get to work, reduce congestion, remain independent and participate in important events. Without bus service, thousands of cars would be added to our already congeted highways, social costs would increase, and our economy would be hurt as the movement of people and goods slowed. From Moorhead to Mankato to Rochester to Minneapolis, Minnesotans throughout or state need bus service.

Transit is an integral part of our transportation system and any legislation increasing funding for highways needs to address the needs of our transit system as well. Bus funding was cut last year and again at the beginning of this year. Fares have also been increased. There will be a loss of service if there are further cuts to bus system funding.

Please support a compromise that ensures transit operating budgets are not cut again for the third time! I understand the state is facing a serious budget deficit. However, proposals have been put forward this session that would increase highway user fees, freeing up general fund money for transit. This would provide the needed funds for our bus service with absolutely no impact on the general fund deficit.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
