Governor Pawlenty needs to sign the bonding bill passed by the House and Senate

The House/Senate conference committee on capital investment (bonding) includes critical funding for expanding our region's light rail, commuter rail, and intercity passenger rail.

This bill is going to Governor Pawlenty and we need his support. The state uses bonding funds to pay upfront the capital costs for infrastructure projects that will bring benefits to the state for decades to come. As a transit supporter, you know how important a regional system of transitways is to giving people real alternatives to driving, reducing our energy dependence and carbon footprint,and supporting a thriving economy that benefits all people in our state.

The Governor would prefer to see a much smaller bonding bill than the one passed by the House and Senate. Please tell him that it's time to invest in a 21st century transportation system and fund these critical statewide transitways.

Key transit projects to be funded:

* $8.5 million to keep Central Corridor on track for a 2014 opening.
* $12.5 million for other key transitways: Bottineau, Cedar Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Red Rock corridor, Riverview corridor, Robert Street corridor, Rush Line corridor, Southwest LRT, I-94 East, and the Union Depot.
* $26 million for intercity passenger rail (i.e. high speed rail from the Twin Cities to Chicago and Duluth) and freight rail improvements (that reduce energy consumption and truck traffic).
