Bonding for transit (2010)
You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the
directions at the bottom.

MN House of Representatives to vote on bonding bill soon!
Every other year, Minnesota legislators pass a bonding bill for capital investments around the state. This is one way transit projects are funded and supported. Transit for Livable Communities, and the Transit Partners coalition, support broad investment in transit projects statewide.
Metro area transit bonding funds will be distributed by the Metropolitan Council among the transitway corridors identified in the metro area. Greater Minnesota projects are in Duluth, Mankato, Northfield, Rochester, and Stewartville.
The benefits of bonding include:
- Each $1 dollar invested in transit results in $6 dollars of economic return (Source: AASHTO, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials)
- Each million dollars spent on public transit creates more than 1600 jobs, nearly twice the jobs created by highway infrastructure projects. (Source: Smart Growth America and US-PIRG )
- Transit can substantially reduce household expenditures on transportation - e.g. by reducing car ownership expenses and energy consumption. Transit use, on average, uses one-half the energy per passenger mile as car travel (Source: American Public Transit Assoc.)
- Transit and bicycle projects typically leverage federal funding at a rate of 20% state money to 80% federal money.
- Buying power is currently high due to low-interest rates and low construction costs.

Bond for transit Dear Representative,
I am excited about Minnesota's progress towards an expanded transit system.
[I support expanded transit because ...]
The House bonding bill includes $50 million in funds to advance metro area transitways and $5 million for greater Minnesota transit projects. Please support bonding funds for these transit projects when you vote on the 2010 bonding bill.
