Action Alert: Northstar commuter rail funding caught in political showdown

Northstar commuter rail funding caught in political showdown

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

Funding for Northstar commuter rail line must happen this year

Background

The Northstar commuter rail line will connect communities along Highway 10 northwest of the Twin Cities to downtown Minneapolis and will continue to build towards a regional transitways system. Minnesota needs to commit $37.5 million dollars in state funding in order to leverage $37.5 in local fund, $132 million dollars in federal funds and to move into the final stage of the project. Proposals have been put in front of the Minnesota legislature the last three years and failed. If the state does not secure funding for Northstar this year it will be nearly impossible to obtain federal funds in the future because our Congressional delegation will not be able to secure federal funds as easily and Northstar will lose its place in line for federal funding.

The House has deleted Northstar funding from the overall bonding bill. It is crucial that the state legislature pass fully fund Northstar this year.

I strongly support the Northstar commuter rail line.

Dear Governor,

Northstar commuter rail is the most viable transportation choice for the rapidly growing corridor northwest of the Twin Cities, and would cost much less than adding highway capacity. It is also an important second leg to our regional transitways system. Northstar funding must be included in this year's bonding bill. I support Northstar for the following reasons:

1. Northstar will effectively add needed transportation capacity in a rapidly growing corridor, and will do it cheaper and faster than any other alternative.

2. Northstar commuter rail is cost-effective. It recently passed the rigorous cost-effectiveness test used by the Federal Transit Administration to evaluate transit projects. Every $1 in state funding leverages $2 in federal money, money that will build transit in another state if we do not fund Northstar.

3. We need to begin building a more balanced transportation system based on the best alternative for each corridor.

Please ensure that state funding for Northstar is included in the bonding bill. It’s the best deal for Minnesota.

Sincerely,

Your name and address here
