Action Alert: Stop Cuts to Transit!

Stop Cuts to Transit!

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

The state is facing a huge budget deficit. Transit cuts are being proposed.

Background

The Governor and the Legislature are considering cuts to transit funding including a $2.6 million cut to metropolitan area transit and a $50,000 cut to Greater Minnesota transit's budget.

Cuts to transit funding will mean reductions in service hours, the cutting of some routes and possibly higher fares. Transit is already under-funded and was hit with budget cuts last session. Transit can't afford any more budget cuts.

Stop cuts to bus systems

Dear Representative Drazkowski,

As a constituent and bus rider, I want to let you know how important bus service is to me. I rely on bus serivce and am worried about budget cuts reducing service hours and even eliminating certain routes. Bus service is critical. It gives people throughout the state a way to stay active and get to work. Most of the people on the bus are going to and from jobs.

I understand you are facing a tough budget situation. However, transit budgets have been under-funded for years. In rural areas, bus service is very limited, only running on certain days or for a few hours. Some counties have no public transportation at all.

In addition, transit has already been cut. Last session metropolitan area transit's budget was cut by $2.7 million and a $.25 fare increase was imposed. Now the state is looking at further transit cuts to balance the current biennial budget.

Transit riders have done their share to reduce the state's budget deficit. We simply can't handle anymore cuts to transit budgets. Budget cuts lead to reduced service, making it more difficult for people to rely on transit rather than getting into cars and adding to traffic congestion. Bus service is a cost-effective way to provide mobility. Cuts to transit impact people's lives leading to increased isolation, increased social costs such as nursing home costs and decreased economic activity. Please vote against cuts to transit budgets.
